Metaphor

Metaphor

"Metaphor is the comparison of two UNLIKE things. For example " Nick is a pig" this doesn't necessarily mean that Nick is a pig but that he is fat, nasty looking. What this quote is doing is comparing him to a pig which is not something someone will be thinking about in the moment. Simile, personification, anthropomorphism, hyperbole, parable, fable, animism, and analogy are all connected to metaphors. Metaphors help us understand things that are not completely clear to us. We use our knowledge and compare things that we know to things that we don’t know to get a better understanding of something else. It sets two things side by side to show us the likeness of them. Metaphors are mostly used in poems because it is one of the most important aspect of poetic style to be mastered. Metaphors in other words can be described as figure of speech because it refers to things it resembles. "Poetry is, first of all, a communication - a thought or message conveyed by the writer to the reader. It is not only an act of creation, but an act of sharing. It is therefore important to the reader that he understands how the poet uses words, how he puts fresh vigor and new meaning into words. The reader's understanding is immeasurably increased if he is familiar with the many techniques or devices of poetry. Some of these are extremely simple; a few are rather elaborate". Simile is a figure of speech like metaphors that compare two indirect things to each other. For example “my grandfather is as happy as a clown” when you hear someone say my grandfather you think oh those boring grandfather stories but when you think about a clown you think of a kids party smiling laughing enjoying the moment. When you put them together and combine then what comes up to mind is that he is a fun grandfather thats always laughing and has a smile on his face. Another example "keep those squares as round as a circle" when you think of a square you think about four corners or like a room with four walls. But when you think about a circle you think about something with no sides you also think about the world the world is round and it rotates round and round. So when you combine these two together you think about not picking a corner to just o with everything and not picking someone or any side. Personification is giving human qualities to animals or objects also an outstanding example of an outstanding quality or idea and and artistic representation of an abstract quality or idea as a person. For example “trees were dancing with the wind” when you think about a tree dancing with the wind you think about a tree moving caused by bad weathering a storm with very strong winds and when you think about dancing you think about dancing all over the place. so when you combine them you think about a hash storm with very strong winds. Another example of Personification Hyperbole is exaggeration or overstatement opposite of understatement. For example ........

" You are a lovely July-flower, Yet one rude wind or ruffling shower Will force you hence, and in an hour.

You are a sparkling rose i' th' bud, Yet lost ere that chaste flesh and blood Can show where you or grew or stood.

You are a full-spread, fair-set vine, And can with tendrils love entwine, Yet dried ere you distil your wine.

You are like balm enclosèd well In amber or some crystal shell, Yet lost ere you transfuse your smell.

You are a dainty violet, Yet wither'd ere you can be set Within the virgin's coronet.

You are the queen all flowers among; But die you must, fair maid, ere long, As he, the maker of this song" .

In "A Meditation for his Mistress" by Robert Herrick, he speaks about this women being beautiful like a flower he compares her to a flower because flower are a loved one. In the poem he talks about this women as being this queen in his eyes. For example when Robert Herrick in the first stanza " You are a lovely July-flower, Yet one rude wind or ruffling shower Will force you hence, and in an hour" He is comparing this women to being this nice beautiful thing that you cant resist to see. Simile is the comparison of two unlike things using like or as. Related to metaphor The difference between a simile and a metaphor is that the simile uses the word "like" or "as" which metaphors can't use.

For example "Tomorrow's weather will be as clear as crystal" you are saying that tomorrow will be a beautiful day with clear sky.
